Advanced Search
You can use Boolean operators AND, OR and NOT to combine two or more search terms or phrases. They can be used to perform searches across multiple search boxes.
Note: To learn more about search techniques for advanced searching, you can check out the Searching Techniques Section in the Research Skills guide.
Use of Brackets
The brackets or parentheses ( ) can be used to group terms together.
e.g. care AND (cat OR dog) finds content containing care and containing either cat or dog
Use of Quotation mark
The use of quotation mark " " can help to look for an exact title or phrase.
e.g. "aged care" finds content containing that exact phrase
Use of Truncation
You can apply truncation * to match any set of zero or more characters.
e.g. educat* finds content containing educate, educated, education, educator, educational...
e.g. travel* finds content containing travel, travels, travelling, travellers...
e.g. fav*rite finds contents containing favourite, favorite...
Use of Wildcards
You can also use question mark wildcard ? to match any single character. However, wildcards do not work at the start of a search term and do not work within quotation marks.
e.g. ta?k finds talk, task, tank...
e.g. l?st finds last, lest, list, lost, lust...
You can use Match Any / All / None / Select All to include and exclude other available search parameters with your search terms.
Match Any = Boolean OR search
Match All = Boolean AND search
Match None = Boolean NOT search
Select All / Clear All = for every type
These selectors can be found on the Advanced Search screen. You can apply the selector Resource Type to retrieve results matching that particular type. You can select more than one resource type at one time if you choose either one: Match Any / March All / Match None.
