Referencing: What is it & why use it?

What is referencing?
Acknowledging sources / other people’s ideas & works. This is done by creating an alphabetical list of resources used in your assignment, formatted according to the chosen or prescribed referencing style (e.g. APA 7th & Harvard). It is known as a reference list or bibliography list and it always goes on the last page / at the end of your assignment. You must also include in-text citations in the body of your assignment directly after a quote or paraphrase, indicating the author's surname and date of the resource from which you retrieved the information.

Why reference?
• To avoid plagiarism
• To show you have researched the topic
• To back up your ideas with evidence
